Good afternoon, and welcome to England. We hope that your visit here will be a pleasant one. Today, I would like to draw your attention to a few of our rules.
The first one is about drinking. Now, you may not buy alcohol in this country if you are under 18 years of age, nor may your friends buy it for you.
Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don’t make unnecessary noise, particularly at night. We ask you to respect other people who may wish to be quiet.
Thirdly, crossing the road. Be careful. The traffic moves on the left side of the road in this country. Use pedestrian crossings (人行横道) and do not take any chances when crossing the road.
My next point is about litter (throwing away waste material in a public place). It is an offence (违法行为) to drop litter in the street. When you have something to throw away, please put it in your pocket and take it home, or put it in a litter bin.
Finally, as regards smoking, it is against the law to buy cigarettes or tobacco if you are under 16 years of age.

After a while, Tommy’s parents, who had recently separated, would arrive for a meeting on his failing schoolwork and bad behavior. Neither parent knew that I had called the other.
Tommy, an only child, had always been a happy, cooperative and top student. How could I make his father and mother believe that his recent failing grades meant a broken-hearted child’s reaction to his parents’ separation and divorce (离婚)?
Tommy’s mother entered and took one of the chairs. Soon the father arrived. Good! At least they were enough to be here in time. They ignored each other.
As I gave a detailed introduction of Tommy’s behavior and schoolwork, I waited for the right words to bring these two together to help them see what they were doing to their son. But somehow the words wouldn’t come. Perhaps if they saw one of his dirty, carelessly done papers?
I found a sheet in the back of his desk. Writing covered both sides: not the exercises, but a single sentence scribbled (胡写乱画) over and over.
Silently I gave it to Tommy’s mother. She read it and then handed it to her husband. Then his face softened.
At last he folded (折叠) the paper carefully, placed it in his pocket, and reached for his wife’s hand. She wiped the tears from her eyes and smiled up at him. He helped with her coat and they left together.
In his own way God had given me the words to reunite that family. He had guided me to the sheet of yellow copy paper covered with the pain outpouring of a small boy’s troubled heart.
The words are “Dear Mom… Dear Daddy… I love…”

Norm Pethrick, a 36-year-old man in Australia’s northern city Darwin, was praised on Thursday for jumping onto a crocodile’s back to save his wife Wendy at Litchfield National Park, a popular tourist spot southwest of Darwin, a local newspaper reported.
Ms Pethrick was standing on a river bank Wednesday afternoon when the saltwater crocodile lunged (扑), locking its mouth on both her legs as it tried to drag her underwater.
Norm Pethrick, who had been collecting water with his wife, immediately went to help her. He jumped onto the back, poked (戳) the eyes of the crocodile and finally got his wife free.
Ms Pethrick was later taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for a medical treatment. The doctors said she was suffering eight puncture wounds in her right leg, a puncture wound in her left leg and a serious cut to one of her fingers.
“This could have been a fatal and tragic situation,” said the general manager of Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH), Dr Len Notaras, according to a local report.
He said Ms Pethrick was saved by her husband’s “quick and diligent actions”.
Dr Notaras also said she would remain in hospital for three or four days and have an operation to clean the wounds, which are easy to get infected because of bacteria (细菌) on the teeth of the crocodile.

Many people manage to break bad habits for a few days, weeks or even months but finally return to them again. Why does this happen?
Sam is a heavy smoker for over 10 years. He tried many times to stop smoking, but went back to smoking. Sam isn’t that kind of social person. Whenever he has to be in groups, he feels uncomfortable. To hide that, he will take out one of the cigarettes and start smoking. This gives us a clear idea why Sam is a smoker. I know that you are thinking of other causes like the nicotine addiction (尼古丁成瘾) and believing that the cigarette will keep him busy, but didn’t he manage to give up smoking for six months?
Sarah’s story is not different from Sam’s. She has been struggling with the habit of overeating. She once managed to break the habit for some time but finally returned to it. Sarah has almost no friends, so her main hobby is watching TV, and her favorite show won’t be that amusing except if it is accompanied (伴随) by food.
As you see, something that seems unrelated to your bad habit may be the main reason behind being unable to break it! Don’t fool yourself by thinking that addiction or having no strong will is stopping you! If you managed to break a habit for a short while and then returned to it again, then you know that you didn’t find the basic cause.
Find this basic cause and solve it and you will be free. Many patients have taken my advice and found it works. Wish you good luck!
63. According to the passage, Sam couldn’t stop smoking mainly because ________.
A. he was a heavy smoker
B. he has poor social skills
C. he thought smoking could improve social skills
D. he had to communicate with too many strangers
64. Why does Sarah form the habit of overeating?
A. Because she has almost no friends.
B. Because she likes all kinds of food.
C. Because she has nothing to do but eat food when watching TV.
D. Because the TV program isn’t interesting to draw her attention.
65. From the passage, if people want to break a bad habit, they need to ________.
A. have a very strong willB. ask friends for some help
C. find out the real reasonD. develop some good habits
66. In what way does the writer develop the text?
A. By telling people some experiences.
B. By giving two supporting examples.
C. By asking some related questions.
D. By listing the harm of bad habits.

Using a mobile phone before going to bed can damage your health, according to a major study.
It says that radiation (辐射) from the mobile phone can cause insomnia (失眠症) and headaches as well as cutting the time spent in deep sleep. Failing to get enough sleep can lead to depression, lack of concentration and personality changes. In teenagers and young children, lack of sleep can result in attention disorders and poor grades.
The research showed that using mobile phones before bed causes people to take longer to reach the deeper stages of sleep and to spend less time in them.
Deep sleep is important as it is the time when the body rejuvenates (更新) cells and repairs damage suffered during the day. Scientists found that using mobile phones an hour before sleep affects it. In the study scientists examined the sleep pattern of 36 women and 35 men aged 18 to 45. Some were exposed to radiation that is similar to what a person receives when using a mobile phone. The others received none. The results are as follows: The first group took longer to enter the first of the deeper stages of sleep and spent less time in the deepest one. However, the second group was opposite.
The findings will shock many parents. Many parents are always worried about their children’s health. But they didn’t have a better way to persuade them not to use mobile phones.
67. The passage mainly tells us that ________.
A. a good way for people to have a deep sleep
B. different people have different sleep patterns
C. using a mobile phone before bed can damage health
D. a way to persuade students not to use mobile phones
68. The underlined word “it” in the fourth paragraph refers to ________.
A. people’s bodyB. a sleep pattern
C. deep sleepD. a mobile phone
69. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. The findings shocked many teachers.
B. Teenagers are using less mobile phones now.
C. The study examined the sleep patterns of 71 people.
D. Parents have found better ways to care their children.
70. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Many children use mobile phones before sleep.
B. The lack of sleep can lead to children’s excitement.
C. Radiation from the mobile phone can cause parents’ worries.
D. The use of mobile phones before sleep doesn’t harm the aged.

[1] I was walking home from school one day and it happened to be a particularly cold and windy day. It was freezing and I was crazy enough to forget my hats and gloves. You can imagine my cheeks were rosy red and my hands were as numb as they can be.
[2] All of a sudden, an old lady drove up beside me and asked if I would like a ride home. At first I said it was OK, but she persisted (坚持) and her warm smile melted away the thought that my parents had often told me never to talk with strangers! We had an amazing chat and she had just such a sweetheart. She told me her address and she dropped me off.
[3] I didn’t see her or talk to her for about a month and one night remembering her kind gesture, I decided to return the favor. So I made a lot of cookies and walked down to her house with my friend. At first I was a bit worried she would not remember me or think that I was a psycho (精神病患者) who poisoned cookies, but luckily, I was completely wrong. She was so happy, and she hugged me and kissed me and seemed so shocked that anyone would do something like that!
[4] When I got home my mom informed me that she called and told my mom that she cried because she was so touched. She said she would never forget the kindness that was given to her! That filled me with such joy! There really is nothing else like helping others and making someone’s day brighter!
